Salma Hayek / Sally Potter's THE ROADS NOT TAKEN follows a day in the life of Leo (Javier Bardem) and his daughter, Molly (Elle Fanning) as she grapples with the challenges of her father's chaotic mind. Affetto da un disturbo neurologico che lo riduce a una presenza catatonica, Leo riceve le cure di una badante e la visita della figlia Molly, che mette da parte il lavoro per accompagnare il padre a una serie di visite mediche. A chi gli sta intorno Leo appare a malapena consapevole di dove si trovi, ma all'interno della sua mente vivono, lucide e pressanti, altre vite alternative che sarebbero potute essere, se gli snodi e i traumi personali della sua esistenza lo avessero condotto a decisioni diverse. A metà tra la rappresentazione viscerale del degrado mentale e lo slancio metafisico di realtà parallele in rotta di collisione, il micro-dramma di Sally Potter cerca di indagare gli effetti di una domanda naturale e comune: come sarebbe la nostra vita se fossimo rimasti con un altro partner, o se ci fossimo trasferiti altrove? La regista di Orlando e dell'ultimo The Party tratta il tema non dal punto di vista razionale ma in chiave impressionista, usando il volto di Bardem - non certo nuovo alle performance estreme e totalizzanti - come una tela su cui si rincorrono veloci rimorso e gioia, dolore ed epifania. Fatidica è però la devozione suprema al sentimentalismo, che rende The Roads not Taken un film inerte ed esclusivamente reattivo, come la povera Elle Fanning nel ruolo di una figlia che le prova tutte per far emergere il padre a cui vuole bene dall'uomo che le sta davanti. Mentre Bardem viaggia nella memoria, visitando un paesaggio messicano bruciato durante le celebrazioni del giorno dei morti e una locanda ventosa che affaccia sul mare della Grecia, il sound design aggressivo inchioda i personaggi in una New York claustrofobica e senza scampo. La sofferenza, mai sublimata in qualcosa di più alto, si fa pura miseria emotiva non dissimile da quella che dominava i film di Iñárritu e Arriaga nei primi anni duemila. Con Salma Hayek e Laura Linney confinate a brevi apparizioni, la dinamica tra padre e figlia è sì centrale, ma al tempo stesso inesplorata vista l'assenza-presenza di Bardem, ed è significativo che entrambi gli attori principali finiscano per recitare al di sotto delle loro capacità. Quello delle vite non vissute è un tema fondamentale nell'esperienza umana, ed è ironico che sfidarlo in campo aperto produca qualcosa di così vuoto e lacrimoso.
